Why Save the Five Bells?
There is no dispute that in its present state, there is little point in saving the Five Bells. Years of neglect and poor management have resulted in a dirty, unfriendly pub most villagers avoid.
But the effects of losing the Five Bells will have a long-term and possibly devastating effect on the village.
- Our young people will have no-where in the village to meet, play music and socialise.
- This will force many to drive outside the village
- Riseley will permanently lose the village darts, pool, skittles and even our football teams.
- For over a hundred years Riseley has had both skittles and football teams
- The village farmhands, workmen and labourers will no longer be able to have a rewarding pint after work.
- The village local has always been important to the local workmen, especially at harvest time.
- Quiz nights, discos, firework night, watching major sporting events and other communal events will cease.
- The Five Bells has always hosted many different events during the year.
- A blot on the landscape. The closed pub could end up being a long-term eyesore on our High Street.
- With the economy as it is, it’s highly unlikely that the brewery will be able to sell off the pub for at least a few years.
- Closure will almost certainly eventually lead to the brewery selling the site to a developer.
- While the field behind the Bells is tied, the pub and its extensive grounds are not. Do we need yet more houses in the village?
While you yourself may never use the Five Bells help
us save it for the benefit of others. |
